The Plan
This November, the Fosston School Board is asking voters to consider a capital projects levy and technology bond to generate about $1.04 million per year for school needs.
If approved by voters:
The capital projects levy would fund:
Curriculum
Textbooks
Classroom supplies
Building utility service costs
The technology bond would fund:
Building security and surveillance
Technology hardware and infrastructure
Computer and network maintenance
Equipment needs
School Funding can be Complex
By law, school districts must keep separate accounts for different types of expenses.
The general fund can cover anything, including teacher salaries, programs and day-to-day operations.
Capital projects levies and technology bonds are limited to specific uses — like classroom supplies, utilities, technology and equipment needs.
Many districts use capital projects levies and bonds to cover these kinds of expenses, freeing up more dollars in their general fund for students and learning. Fosston has not taken advantage of this option – YET.
By covering these costs through the proposed levy and bond, Fosston Public Schools can free up general fund dollars for the people and programs students depend on, including:
Teachers and support staff
Small class sizes
Reading and math supports
Career and technical education
Extracurriculars
This is not about buying new technology. It's about freeing up our general fund to protect and strengthen the classes and programs our students count on.
